Providing evidence to the police.

A statement is a written record of events given by a witness or victim and written down by the police that requires the witness’s signature once they have read through what the police officer has recorded and confirm they approve of it, a statement is that of the witness providing it and not the police officer.

Providing a statement to the police is a person providing their belief of what they understand to have happened, what they saw or heard and at times to hand over evidence such as a receipt, CCTV or stolen property. It is important that the witness is comfortable with what is recorded in the statement against what they remember.
