Works to improve Pier Square
Works to improve Pier Square one of the main public pedestrian spaces alongside the river front in Erith will begin in early November.
The improvements will include expanding and opening up the space so it’s more accessible and safer, providing a variety of new seating and better lighting, together with landscaping and trees to provide shade and shelter.
Pier Square is located alongside Wharfside Close and next to a small underused, unrestricted car park which has attracted abandoned cars over the years. The car park will become public space with visitors able to enjoy more extensive views to the river. A central space will be kept open and flexible for holding community events.
Councillor Munur, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Growth said:
“The improvements at Pier Square will create more public space with better views of the river that the local community can enjoy and be proud of. Along with the restoration of the old library building and improvements to the Riverside Gardens this is another important step in the continuing regeneration of Erith”.
The improvements at Pier Square are being funded through a combination of developer contributions and transport funding from TfL as part of the London Borough of Bexley’s Greater Erith programme.
Access to Erith Pier and the flood defence gate will be maintained throughout the works.
